So THAT's why I feel so lousy!
Recommended for the Misunderstood HypoglicemicI thought this book was absoultly fantistic. Anyone suffering from the symptoms of Hypoglycemia should read this. It finally answered so many questions about why we feel the way we do. How can we know what is going on with our blood sugar. I wish I had been handed this book when I was diagnosed. If you are confused about what is happening to you when your blood sugar drops, this is the book for you!!!
It really helped meThis was only book about my condition, it has really made a big difference. I have really been feeling so much better. The biggest relief is to know it wasn't my imagination. There are so many sypmtoms and this is where I found out what they were. The doctors couldn't really help me alot. But this book answered all my questions. I would recommend it to anyone with this condition. Thanks to the author for helping me!

Luther's Theology of the Cross: Martin Luther's Theological Breakthrough
Published in Paperback by Blackwell Publishers (May, 1990)
Average review score:

excellent scholarship on luther's breakthroughthis is one of the best books on the market for laymen and
clergy...mcgrath does a fine job explaining the epistemological,
philosophical, and theological background that led luther to discover the theology of the the cross...it is only because luther had a proper understanding of the Law & Gospel, that he was able to kneel before the foot of calvary with this beautiful doctrine..."the cross," said luther, "is the safest of all places. Blessed is the man who understands this." Blessed also are those who purchase this book and work through the intense scholarship perhaps to find a tower experience of thier own.
Once Luther was able to establish the theologia crucis, he then set to distingiush it from the theology of glory...this meant that fallen man desired to use his rational powers, his merits, and his mystical assent to live coram deo---before the face of God...luther showed that God can only be found in the shame and ignomy of suffering of the God-man Christ Jesus.....only faith can understand this (sola fide)... as a final note, it was exactly this doctrine which gave deitrich bonhoeffer to call the church to suffer amidst persecution and challenge the Nazi regime by martydom...bonhoeffer was the best student, in my opinion, of Luther's theology of the cross. amen

Scholarly and GroundbreakingThose familiar with McGrath's set, Iustitia Dei, know what to expect in this book: careful documentation, well-reasoned argumentation, and dry-as-bones writing style. Nevertheless, Luther's Theology of the Cross is a substantial and groundbreaking contribution to Luther studies. McGrath traces Luther's movement from a theologian of the via moderna to a theologian of the cross, recounting the step by step transformation that occurred through Luther's prolonged pondering and studious research on the concepts of iustitia Dei, fides Christi, iustitia fidei. Along the way, McGrath analyzes Luther's role in the Reformation and encourages an end to attempts to pinpoint Luther's so-called 'breakthrough'. The final two chapters are the most insightful as they outline Luther's theologia crucis and describe the historical impact of the doctrine. Overall, this is a detailed and scholarly piece of historical theology which should be of interest to anyone in the field of Reformation studies.
Defining LutherWith this very accessible work on Luther's theology, McGrath has entered the ranks of distinguished Luther scholars. McGrath writes in a manner that even a newcomer to the topic can understand, yet with enough detail to satisfy an experienced scholar. If you could only purchase one book on Luther's theology, this would be it.

Maestro Plays
Published in Hardcover by Scholastic Inc ()
Average review score:

The Maestro PlaysBill Martin does another fabulous job! When read aloud, this book is musical and rythmical. It introduces children to rhyming words and is good for building children's ability to distinguish the ending sounds of words. All in all, this is a fun book to read and listen to. My preschool students love it!
My Kids' FavoriteThis book was my daughter's favorite when she was a baby. Now her new little brother has reacted in the same way. Little ones don't often have to patience to sit still while you read every page of a book, but for some reason they find the Maestro so captivating that they request it over and over again. Our little crawler will drag it across the room and plop it in my lap. How can you say no to a request like that?
The greatest.Nonsense in the best sense. Rhythm and clown. How can you miss with this, when, in the middle of the madness "He stops. He mops his brow"?

Mammoth: The Sierra Legend
Published in Hardcover by Mountain Sports Press (November, 2002)
Average review score:

Great BookThis book is awesome! The pictures are excelent and the information is great. Nice to know what Mammoth used to look like before it became the famous place that it is today.
Love skiing? Love the Sierra? Love Mammoth? This is for you.Anyone who likes skiing will love this book. Forstenzer's familiarity with the Sierra makes it one that won't just sit around on the coffee table. He writes engagingly and tells great stories about the early days of skiing in Mammoth and its culture, how the ski area was built and some of the people involved. The photographs are astonishing and well worth the price alone, but in combination with the writing Forstenzer lets us glimpse what made Mammoth Mountain the great ski resort it has become. This is a terrific book about past and present skiing days at Mammoth. Like most any ski item associated with Warren Miller - breathtaking!
Artwork for your coffee tableAbsolutely the most beautiful collection of photos of Mammoth and the surrounding area can be found in this book! It provides a wonderful history and insight into the creation and life of this skiing Mecca. This is a must have for any Mammoth lover!

Mark of the Beast
Published in Paperback by La Casa Press (01 January, 1999)
Average review score:

Excellent ReadingThis book grabs your attention from the very first paragraph and doesn't let it go until you are finished reading it! The way the author weaves biblical prophecy, fiction, mystery and current events into the storyline makes it so believable that you have to wonder... what if?....
sure to be a blockbuster!Entertaining and provocative...and positively eerie in light of current world happenings. The "big plot" behind the story is incredibly clever. The dialogue is tight with good wordsmithing. I hope we'll be hearing much more from author Martin Stone.
A story to really reach into your mindOnce you start into this book, you cannot put it down. The way the author weaves the Revelation predictions into our everyday lives, leaves you in a daze wondering if this is not really the true interpretation of scripture. An extremely amazing twist to what religion has taught.

Martin & Meditations on the South Valley
Published in Paperback by New Directions Publishing (October, 1987)
Average review score:

Walking the dusty streets of our hearts"Martin and Meditations on the South Valley" provide the clearest voice for the dispossessed gente--la raza--of Aztlan. JSB is the greatest living writer among Chicanos simply because he captures the anger, the despair and the violence that oppression breeds among Chicanos. His brilliance is that he simultaneously captures the beauty, the love, the humanity of a people who have never lost touch with their lands, their families, their culture, their indigenous roots and their humanity.
jimmy writes from the heartJimmy Santiago Baca writes of experiences that most people will never have, except through the reading of this epic poem...many may think that they have a 'hard' life, but to read the author's story is to have but a glimpse of the beauty and pain that he has lived, and survived, and become stronger from...his story is one that is lived by many, but written of by so few...I hope that you read this book and achieve the insight and understanding of his true heroism, in the face of unbelievable odds, that would surely break all of us who never lived on the streets ,or who never had to learn of the power of the written word while in prison....he has returned from the ashes to tell a story of rebirth through true poetry, of survival not imagined, but lived....I work with young adults every day that must overcome the obstacles that Jimmy Santiago Baca has survived...and I hope that the reader learns from what he has written...poetry has the power to heal, and this book won a national award because it is truely special and unique, as is the author...thank you...
Beautiful verse and surreal imagery!Beautiful verse and surreal imagery! Jimmy Santiago Baca allows the reader a glimpse of Latino-American life in Martin & Meditations on the South Valley. This book is a highly recommended read, both for its poetic value and introspective quality

Martin Chambi: Photographs, 1920-1950
Published in Paperback by Smithsonian Institution Press (January, 2003)
Average review score:

An impressive legacy of memory and prideEnhanced with an informative Foreword by Mario Vargas Llosa and introductions by Edward Ranney and Publio Lopez Mondejar, Martin Chambi: Photographs 1920-1950 presents the enduring and transcendent black-and-white photography of Martin Chambi, one of Peru's most acclaimed photographers. His pictures strikingly present the daily lives of Cuzco men and women in the first half of the twentieth century, and presents a wealth of portraits filled with emotion, determination, which ultimately form an impressive legacy of memory and pride. Martin Chambi: Photographs, 1920-1950 is a highly recommended addition to any personal, professional, or academic Photography Studies reference collection.
Chambi Captures The Essence Of CuzcoI can't stop looking at this book. It is that captivating. Chambi's work helps to preserve one of the world's most fascinating and unique cultures. To look at his photography is to look at Cuzco itself. In the eyes of the people of Cuzco you can see years of desperation yet at the same time a great sense of hope. This collection of photos brings to life Cuzco pre-Machu Picchu tourism boom and does it wonderfully. Chambi was not only Peru's best photographers, he was at the time one of the wolrd's best. It has been said that he showed a perfect sense of balance in his work. Chambi clearly captures moods as is evident in this collection. Among his most well known photographs is "Tristeza Andina" or "Andean Melancholy." This is a haunting but beautiful photograph of a Quechua Indian playing a flute with his llama standing behind him. It is difficult to describe the feelings that this photograph can evoke. This book is easily worth any amount you may pay for it.
Sublime photosThis is a Smithsonian monograph collection of photographs by the Peruvian photographer that portray many facets of Peruvian life... Print quality is excellent. The photographs are amazing and a fascinating look at culture, landscape and society 1920 - 1950.

Martin Quinn : A Novel of Suspense
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (29 April, 2003)
Average review score:

Martin QuinnIt is a great book! Not your typical gangster suspense story. The book comes alive with the setting in NYC and characters. I had an image for each character in my mind. I could not put it down, what a great ending!
Excellent. The story is tough and gritty, the protagonist is molded on the typical tough guy but you soon learn he is completely unique. The writing style and story will keep you intrigued. It is a timeless story that takes place in Brooklyn and Manhattan, an intense love story playing out in the midst of Little Odessa. Original and smart.
Superb!!I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Although it took me a short while to adapt to the author's style, the story and the characters held my attention throughout. It's a story of loyalty, ambition, love and betrayal, seen through the eyes of a young man trying to make his way through the New York City underworld. It's one of those books that you want to power through so you can see how things turn out, but at the same time, you don't want it to end. Pick it up - you won't be disappointed. I only hope Anthony Lee's subsequent efforts can live up to my now-heightened expectations.

Martin Yan's Culinary Journey Through China
Published in Paperback by Bay Books (October, 1997)
Average review score:

My first and favorite chinese cookbookI bought this book when it first came out after watching Martin Yan's cooking show on PBS. He's a great chef and teacher. I was lucky to buy this book as my first intro to chinese cooking. If I had bought another book, I might have been too intimidated. But Martin Yan's book of simple recipes with complex flavors was the perfect start to learn how to cook chinese. The recipes are easy, simple and delicious. You'll want to cook them over and over again, and before you know it, you'll begin to experiment on your own, using the simple techniques you learn in this book. I've made almost every recipe in it, and nearly every one has turned out great. From the pot-stickers to the soups to the salads to the stir-frys, all of them tasty and easy to make. The one thing I disagree with Martin Yan on is his saying "don't stare-fry, stir-fry," meaning that you should always keep stirring the food around in your wok (or fry pan). I've found many recipes benefit from a little charring here and there, so less stirring can often add tremendous flavor in some of the dishes. Anway, I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have over the years! It's one of the best in this genre of cookbooks.
Best on my shelfThis is my most used cookbook. Great explanations and easy instructions. Anyone can with this cookbook.
This man shows why he is so greatThe book starts off by literally taking the reader through a journey - A journey that totaled more than 65,000 miles throughout China over land, sea, air, and waterways during a three-month period. I learned something new myself reading this book. I have always tried to explain to people how to understand the balance of flavors, taste and textures of food. Martin Yan explains it in one easy thought - yin and yang. "Yin represents the feminine, yielding, darker, more mysterious forces, while yang stands for the masculine, harder, brighter and hotter ones. In the world of food, yin might be cooler, moister, softer foods, like winter melon, asparagus or crabmeat. Yang might take the form of chiles, ginger, fried foods or red meat." The concept of the yin and yang also fit the textures of the food as well. The next part of the book talks about special equipment, tools and techniques.
The recipes include Hot and Sour Beijing Dumplings, Duck Soup, Seafood in an Orange Basket (an incredible dish that is so easy to make), Minced Poultry with Walnuts in Lettuce Cups, Mongolian Roast Lamb, Mushrooms in Fragrant Broth, Steamed Garden Vegetables, Fish in a Bamboo Leaf, Steamed Spareribs in Plum Sauce, Tofu Custard with Tropical Fruits, Honey Walnut Prawns, Ginger-Date Wontons, Asparagus with Sweet and Pungent Dressing, and Spicy Fun See Noodle Salad.
The recipes are well written with a little history for an item of each recipe. Food styling and photography of this book are outstanding. Some of the ingredients in the book will only be found in specialty shops or Oriental markets, i.e. dried black mushrooms, nori (Japanese seaweed), Sichuan peppercorns and dried bean thread noodles.
This book was aiming to be the first book to receive a perfect score from me, until the very end of the cookbook. Martin Yan wrote an incredible book. I felt the last two pages of advertising took a little bit away from the book however

Mary Anne and the Library Mystery (Baby-Sitters Club Mystery, 13)
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
This book is like having a most knowledgable and empathetic doctor sit down with you and explain everything you ever needed to know. Martin L. Budd describes more about how our blood sugar levels affect our bodies than any endocrynologist or other physician I've ever been too. This book not only gives symptoms, but helps you understand exactly what is happening within the body to cause them -- and how to treat or alleviate them!
Everything from headaches to depression to sensitivity of sight and sound to decision making to blood pressure and even more is affected by our glucose levels. Why? Simply put, because glucose is what feeds our brain cells and keeps us alive!
While easy to understand, Dr. Martin L. Budd's book also gives us technical and medical explanations of the condition as well as insight to why blood sugar disorders are both so common and so commonly overlooked or misdiagnosed.
I highly recommend reading this book. Even if you don't suspect you have hypoglycemia or diabetes, it is so informative that it is well worth the read. And for those who do have hypoglycemia, I've learned more about low blood sugar from this book than all the others I've read on the topic combined.
